Thanks to the efforts of Simone Karin (gimp.lisanet.de) all Mac OS X users now have the chance to download and use GIMP 2.8.
Gimp normally 'opens' an EPS file by rasterizing it first, normally through GhostScript. If you don't have ghost script installed, this may be failing or there might not be an eps plugin installed on your copy of the Mac OS X version of Gimp.

Also hopefully will be drag and drop ability so you can drop an image onto the icon to open The GIMP and start working on it.

As you can read in her GIMP 2.8.0 for Mac announcement, she has built some other very useful plugins for GIMP 2.8 too and put them into the package (i.e. Remote desktop for mac. wavelet denoise, chromatic abberation, focus blur, UFRaw and more).
